Cuban Black Beans Recipe

Cuban black beans, known as 'Frijoles Negros,' are a beloved Cuban dish. Simmered with aromatic spices and a sofrito, they offer a rich, savory flavor and velvety texture. These versatile beans are a cornerstone of Cuban cuisine, enjoyed as a side, over rice, or in various dishes, representing the heart of the island's culinary tradition. 

 

Ingredients

2- 15oz cans of black beans (do not rinse) or 1.5 Cups of dried beans cooked

1.5 Cups water

1 Tbsp Cuban Bean Seasoning

3 Tbsp olive oil

3 Lg. garlic cloves crushed and finely chopped

1/2 medium onion finely chopped

1 Tbsp tomato paste

1 tsp rice or white vinegar

2 Tbsp chopped cilantro (optional)

Directions

1.  In a medium pot combine black beans, water and Cuban Beans Seasoning. Cook over medium heat until it comes to a boil. Lower heat to medium-low and continue to cook, stirring frequently, for about 10 minutes.

2.  In a small pan, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add garlic and Saute until light golden brown. Add onion and cook until translucent (about 4 minutes). Add Tomato paste and mix to combine, about a minute or until the tomato paste is fragrant. 

3.  Add the mixture, cilantro (if using) and vinegar to the beans. Bring the heat up to medium and continue to cook until it begins to thicken, about 5 minutes. serve over white rice (see recipe).
